THRESHOLD: The weightless line where reality meets its reflection.
Painting this series, I began to see reflection not as a passive mirror, but as an equal reality. Water holds an absolute accountability: a landscape of harmony reflects harmony, whilst discord reflects discord.
Running through the core of these paintings is this threshold, a meeting point with no physical dimension. Eastern philosophy suggests this place of contact is consciousness itself: the space where the outer universe transforms into inner meaning.
This thinking suggests our personal threshold is porous and that our reflection is not separate but merges with us.Â
Perhaps this is where all experience begins and ends: at the threshold where the outer world becomes the inner world, and reality meets its reflection.
Artistic Method
Using a painting knife and oil, I explore the interplay between the soluble and the solid. Deliberate knife strokes shape tone and form, activating the relationship between negative and positive space. This inquiry is informed by the principles of Mie scattering, where light, diffused through atmospheric particles forms a luminous field. By reducing spatial separation and creating a dialogue between foreground and distance, I invite the viewer to experience light not as something that rests upon form, but as a force that permeates it.
